Misc

Things that don't fit anywhere else. Mostly thoughts on various topics.

  • Some thoughts about how we teach students to think about molecules, based on an experience teaching the Jahn-Teller Theorem to undergraduate chemists.

  • A reflection on a trip to Nigeria in 2024, hoping to provide some counterpoint to other travel advice.

  • This article is about the widespread use of wavelength units for things in spectroscopy is basically stupid.

  • Recently my friend Damla Ülker and I worked on a project where we tried to make a wall display of a timeline showing the history of chemistry, but in a way that would be more thought-provoking and challenging than most traditional histories. It's currently displayed in the George Porter Building at the University of Leicester. A link to high-resolution versions of all the elements in the timeline is here.
